Small Flush Releases Too Much Water (Full Volume)

Pressing the small flush button releases the full cistern volume instead of the water-saving amount

The same symptom can have different causes. Confirm the cistern label, installation generation and applicable manufacturer instructions. Use only safely accessible checks; ask technical support when unsure.

Check 01

Check the Push Rod Adjustment

The official Schwab troubleshooting documentation for models 187 and 198 both identify the same primary cause: the push rod is sticking out too much due to incorrect assembly. When the small flush push rod protrudes too far, it lifts the outlet valve higher than intended, causing a full volume discharge instead of a partial flush. On model 187: Make the correct push rod adjustment for the small volume. On model 198: Push the rod to the very end before turning it 90 degrees. This is the same rod adjustment that applies to the continuous-running fault — incorrect rod length causes multiple problems.

Check 02

Check the Outlet Valve Float Magnet

Both model 187 and 198 documents identify a second cause: a detached magnet on the large volume float inside the outlet valve. The dual-flush mechanism uses a magnetic float to control the small flush volume — when the magnet detaches, the valve cannot distinguish between small and large flush, and defaults to releasing the full volume. On model 187: The documentation states to change the outlet valve entirely. On model 198: Install a new outlet valve. In both cases, the complete outlet valve assembly (Part 239 070) is required because the magnetic float mechanism is integral to the valve and cannot be repaired separately.

These checks provide context for a support enquiry. Confirm any replacement article against the exact model drawing and manufacturer instructions.
