Flush Plate Button Doesn't Work or Feels Soft

The flush button on the wall plate doesn't activate the flush, or the button depresses without springing back

Identify the model first.

The same symptom can have different causes. Confirm the cistern label, installation generation and applicable manufacturer instructions. Use only safely accessible checks; ask technical support when unsure.

Check 01

Check the Push Rod Assembly

Based on the official Schwab troubleshooting data, push rod issues are the most common cause of non-responsive flush buttons across all models. The push rod transmits the button press to the outlet valve lifting mechanism inside the cistern. On model 199: Check that the push rod is assembled correctly — if it protrudes too much, it may be permanently pressing the button, or if too short, it may not reach the mechanism. On model 187: Do not mix front and top push rod adjustments. Ensure the push rod is attached correctly and is not hitting the bridge. On model 198: Push the rod to the very end before turning 90 degrees to lock. With High Design plates, the push rod can stick against the support plate — loosen and reposition the support plate.

Check 02

Check the Activating Lever Connection

All three Schwab model documents identify a disconnected activating lever as a cause of no flush response. The activating lever must be hooked into the outlet valve lifting eye. If this connection has come undone, the push rod moves but does not lift the valve. Remove the flush plate, access the cistern interior, and check that the lever is properly connected to the valve lifting eye. On model 187, also check that the bridge assembly is in the correct position and that the activation unit has not come loose.

Check 03

Check for Soft/Stuck Button on High Design Plates (Model 198)

Model 198 with High Design line flush plates has a documented issue: due to side load applied by the High Design buttons, the push rod can get stuck against the support plate. This is more likely with thicker walls in front of the cistern. The button may feel soft, sticky, or fail to spring back. Solution: Loosen the support plate to find its correct position to match the cover plate, then fix it in that position. This aligns the button mechanism so it travels freely without binding.

These checks provide context for a support enquiry. Confirm any replacement article against the exact model drawing and manufacturer instructions.
